Chinese AI Firms Suspend Chatbot Services During National College Entrance Exams
Major Chinese technology companies including Alibaba, ByteDance, DeepSeek, Tencent, and Moonshot voluntarily disabled their AI chatbot platforms during the critical Gaokao examination period from June 7-10. The precautionary measure aimed to prevent potential cheating through digital means, with Alibaba's Qwen and Tencent's Yuanbao additionally restricting image recognition capabilities during test hours.
Authorities implemented a multi-layered security protocol featuring biometric verification, electromagnetic signal disruption, electronic device screening, and real-time behavioral monitoring. The Ministry of Education reported 13.35 million exam takers this year, a slight decrease of 70,000 from 2024. The standardized tests cover mandatory subjects of Chinese literature, mathematics, and English language.
Notably, AI systems displayed contextual awareness by rejecting queries related to exam content. Screenshots circulated on social media showed chatbots declining code interpretation requests with explicit reference to the ongoing national exams. While some visual analysis functions remained operational, attempts to submit test materials triggered automated rejection responses.
